Gasali Adeyemo uses indigo in his work because it is a natural dye and because of its long history within his Yoruba culture. In the second lecture in the Santa Fe Botanical Garden series on colors of the plant world Adeyemo weaves a story of indigo through his life work as a master batik artist. Adeyemo speaks to the cycle of indigo, from harvesting, processing, dyeing; and reveals through this presentation why indigo is “the color of love”.
About the Speaker: Gasali Adeyemo is third born of five from a small rural village, Ofatedo, located in Osun State, Nigeria. His mother was his first and most important teacher in learning the traditional arts of the Yoruba Tribe.In 1990 Adeyemo attended the Nike Center for Arts and Culture, where he remained for a total of six years. The first two years of my experience at the Nike Center were spent mastering the arts of batik painting on fabric, indigo dyeing, quilt making, embroidery, appliqué, and batik painting on rice paper. During the following four years, Adeyemo spent long days teaching these skills to incoming students at the Nike Center. Eventually the opportunity to exhibit work and travel outside of Nigeria presented itself. This experience opened the door to traveling the world conducting workshops and exhibitions. Adeyemo's recent workshops include Indigo Sutra in Kolkata India, Mendocino Art Center, and John Campbell Folk School. Adeyemo currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
