In this hands-on, playful and comprehensive class you will learn to use tools and materials specific to constructing a 10”x 10” glass mosaic that will “weather” the weather. Choosing from a variety of beautiful mosaic glass, you’ll master cutting and shaping these materials into tesserae (small cut pieces) to bring your design to full color.
A large part of the mosaic process is preparing your substrate (the backer for your mosaic). You will cut, prepare and even install a hanging system on a lightweight but strong substrate called wedi board that is used by many mosaic artists. Additionally the instructor will demonstrate how to mix small amounts of thin set (glue) and grout to complete your art.
You can bring a simple design (a leaf, tulip, sun, something you might see in a child’s coloring book) or choose from available patterns and garden subjects.
Please bring a bag lunch and something to drink.
Supply fee includes the use of: drawing materials for design creation, choices of ready-to-use sketches, glass nippers, safety goggles, abundant and gorgeous colors of vitreous glass and opaque recycled glass, wedi board, hanging system, thinset, grout and safety masks.
About your Instructor: Lisa Domenici is a mosaic artist and instructor with many years experience. Her mosaics began as school and community projects working with children, adults and families. Studies with renown mosaic artist like Isaiah Zagar, Laurel True and Gary Drostle, as well as an artist residency at Southbank Mosaics in London have inspired her and expanded her techniques. She incorporates ceramic and porcelain tiles, vitreous and stained glass, vintage dish-ware, and mirror in her work. Her expertise is working with the community and she is currently installing a large mosaic of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the San Juan Diego Friary in Albuquerque.
