In this workshop covering themes regarding Ecotechnics and Biospherics, you will receive an introduction to constructed wetlands and graywater irrigation approaches. Subjects including organic vegetable gardening and fruit orchards in a dry climate will be covered. Mark will elaborate on Biosphere 2 and its lessons for sustainability: farming without chemicals, nutrient and water recycling, and integrating technology with life systems.We will also explore indoor air quality and natural approaches for biofiltration using indoor plants and soils.
About your Instructor: Dr. Mark Nelson is a founding director of the Institute of Ecotechnics and has worked for several decades in closed ecological system research, ecological engineering, the restoration of damaged ecosystems, desert agriculture and orchardry, and wastewater recycling. He is chairman of the Institute of Ecotechnics and head of Wastewater Gardens International. Nelson received his PhD in environmental engineering sciences from the University of Florida in 1998 and an MS from the University of Arizona in 1995. He was a member of the eight-person biospherian crew for the first two-year closure experiment at Biosphere 2 from 1991 to 1993. His books include Pushing Our Limits: Insights from Biosphere 2 (University of Arizona Press, 2018), The Wastewater Gardener: Preserving the Planet One Flush at a Time (Synergetic Press, 2014), and he co-authored Life Under Glass: The Inside Story of Biosphere 2 (Synergetic Press, 1993).
