Pruning a Fruit Tree as an Espalier

Espalier is the ancient horticultural art of pruning and training a tree or shrub to grow flat against a support in order to create a living sculpture. Espalier was originally used to create outdoor “walls” in Europe during the Middle Ages and was also planted in interior courtyard gardens to prevent late frost bud-kill.Other records show this technique dates back to ancient Egypt, where hieroglyphs of espaliered fig trees have been found in tombs dating back to 1400 B.C.
Come to this fun, hands-on workshop to learn the art of espalier. You can use the techniques taught in this class on fruit trees in your landscape, or future trees you would like to include. Learn how to incorporate espalier skills to make your outdoor space a work of art. We will work with local apple trees and you will take home a completed potted plant at the end of the day.
About the Instructor: Jeff DePew is a certified Professional Wetland Scientist and holds a certification in Restoration Ecology. He is a Professor Emeritus in Biological and Ecological Studies from Webster University.
