Join the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, The Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance, The Institute for Applied Ecology/Southwest Program, and the Master Gardener Association for a deep dive into seeds and the importance they play in our lives. This series will take place over the course of three days, and will leave you with a profound understanding and knowledge of seeds. From how to identification to collection, this unique class offering will give you a greater understanding on just how important these tiny components of our lives have shaped our history and will continue to shape our future. Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds. Worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. SEED: The Untold Story follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds. You’ll learn about our seed heritage and culture; how to grow from seed and collect them; botany, genetics, and breeding. Includes hands on exercises in botany, dissection, threshing and cleaning seeds.
A delicious, healthy lunch is included.
- Sunday Oct. 27 8:30-12:30 FIELD TRIP: NATIVE SEED COLLECTING AND CLEANING
- Meet at County Fairgrounds, 3229 Rodeo Rd. to caravan to field trip location, Institute for Applied Ecology Seed Ranch

Learn to identify and collect native rangeland seeds that are used to reclaim fire damaged public lands. Using various equipment, we will clean the seeds you collect and prep them for restoration use by the USFS, BLM, and Park Service.
About your Instructors:
Diane Pratt has been a Master Gardener since 2014, is a certified SCAT compost instructor and manages the compost demonstration area at the County Fairgrounds. She has attended Grain School, Seed Summit, Bread Lab, and Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance’s Seed School Teacher Training. Diane is a physician with the Indian Hospital, a seed steward, avid fruit and vegetable grower, and member and instructor with Home Grown New Mexico.
Seed School in a Day was developed by Bill McDorman,Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance. Bill operated his own bio-regional seed company, Seeds Trust, High Altitude Gardens, for 28 years. He has been teaching seed saving for more than 30 years and is recognized as one of the most inspirational and influential educators in the movement. Learn more.
Institute for Applied Ecology/Southwest Program The Southwest Program is a branch of IAE located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Our goal is to support the conservation, restoration, and recovery of New Mexico’s diverse biological resources in collaboration with conservation leaders in the state. Improving the supply of ecologically appropriate native plant materials for restoration and recovery of rare plants and butterflies, including Monarch butterflies, is a central focus. Learn more.
