Caring for the Rare: Conservation Efforts to Save Threatened and Endangered Plants in the Southwestern US

Steven Blackwell, Conservation Collections Manager

Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona

Deserts are some of the most threatened ecosystems on Earth, and at the root of this has been the decline of the native plants that support them. Desert Botanical Garden (DBG) is well known for its conservation of rare plants in the Southwest, including New Mexico and Arizona.

Steve Blackwell, is the conservation collections manager at the DBG and will share some of the many challenges and successes during his career, including field projects, seed banking, curation of rare plant species, and tissue culture to expedite the propagation of rare species for reintroduction.  Steve has a B.S. in Urban Horticulture (2005) and a B.S in Conservation Biology and Ecological Sustainability (2009), both from Arizona State University.
