Discover how the garden’s new science and conservation initiative is tackling the pressing conservation challenges faced by the diverse plant heritage in New Mexico and the Southwestern region.
Cristina will delve into the importance of collective action and the establishment of partnerships to boost conservation efforts and safeguard the plant heritage of New Mexico for future generations.
About the speaker
Cristina Salvador is a dedicated ecologist with a deep-rooted passion for plant conservation. She discovered her interest in ecology while studying Ecuador’s tropical coastal forests, her parents’ native country. She holds a B.S. in Biology from Duke University and an M.S. in Biology from Stanford University, specializing in Ecology and Evolution. Her work with public gardens, universities, and government agencies has advanced the conservation of endemic plants in Hawaii, California, Panama, and New Mexico. Since joining SFBG in 2010, she has played a key role in its development, collections management, and operations. As the founding Director of Conservation in 2024, she now leads efforts in ex-situ conservation, habitat restoration, and the protection of rare and threatened species while overseeing the Garden’s library and herbarium collections.
