Summer Seminar: The Art of the Bee
Dr. Robert E. Page Jr
The Garden’s Summer Seminar is an opportunity to interact in a seminar format with a distinguished scholar/author over a three-day period.
This year’s inaugural seminar will feature Professor Robert E. Page, Jr., one of the foremost honey bee geneticists in the world. The impact of bees on our world is immeasurable. As noted in the abstract of his most recent book (The Art of the Bee) “bees are responsible for the evolution of the vast array of brightly colored flowers and for engineering the niches of multitudes of plants, animals, and microbes. They’ve painted our landscapes with flowers through their pollination activities and have evolved the most complex societies to aid their exploitation of the environment.”
Dr. Page has published more than 250 research papers and articles and is the author of The Spirit of the Hive: The Mechanisms of Social Evolution, published by Harvard University Press in 2013 and The Art of the Bee: Shaping the Environment from Landscapes to Societies, published by Oxford University Press in 2020.
He is Provost Emeritus and Regents Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University, a UC Davis Distinguished Emeritus Professor and Emeritus Chair of the UC Davis Department of Entomology and has served as an external faculty member at the Santa Fe Institute. Professor Page was recently featured as a “legend” in the American Entomologist, the official publication of the American Entomological Society, which stated that he “is considered a pioneer in the field and one of the current top bee scientists.” A colleague stated that Page is “arguably the most influential honey bee biologist of the past 30 years.
