The Santa Fe Botanical Garden welcomes you to this introductory lecture to discuss the range of plant-fungal interactions, and how they differ from each other. Utilizing several common and widespread examples such as mycorrhizae, Pythium decay, powdery mildew, tree wood decay as well as two examples of plant microbes, we will discuss how these fungi are able to cause disease in humans.
About your Instructor: Joseph Morton, Professor of Microbiology and Genetics at West Virginia University for 37 years, curated the only living world collection of arbuscular endomycorrhizal fungi for 26 years (funded by the National Science Foundation). Joseph has published 92 articles/ reviews/book chapters and has consulted for 25 companies/institutes. He has taught 14 workshops on fungi in the U.S. and 6 other countries; 45 invited lectures covering a wide range of topics. Joseph has also developed an introductory genetics course (elective) that increased in enrollment from 24 to 118 over five years. He has taught an introductory plant pathology course for 37 years (25-30 students/semester) and is a welcomed new resident to New Mexico.
